New Name For Sandara Park’s K-Pop Group
Mar 31st, 2009 Posted in Korean Celebrity, Korean Music | 2 comments »This has been announced yesterday, March 30, by YG Entertainment. Sandara Park’s new group, officially named “21” will now be known as “2NE1“. Apparently there has been some recent discovery by the management since the press release for the group’s name a few days ago. Explained by a YG staff,
“We recently announced that the female Big Bang group would be called “21“, as in “to anyone“. However, it was found that there was already a male singer that had debuted in 2005 with the name “To Anyone“. Honestly, we had no idea that someone had already debuted under this name. When “21” appeared on tv, the subtitles even put the name as “2NE1″. In their debut album, there is even a song called “2NE1″ and this was a decision that was made before all the criticism.”
“The group was planning on being introduced as “2NE1″ formally before their debut album went on sale, but we ended up announcing it because of this development. Therefore, we hope that there is no misunderstanding about this mishap. On this day “2NE1” was supposed to mean “to anyone”. However, there are other meanings besides that one in that name. Since there is already someone using “21 (to anyone)“, we will no longer use that meaning.”
“2NE1 will be their official name. “NE” stands for “New Evolution”, and the “21″ also stands for “21st century“. Therefore, “2NE1″ is the “New Evolution of the 21st century.“
So, to sum it all up, the new girl group is now officially be known as “2NE1″ based off the single on their not-yet-released debut album not the previously reported name “21″. The name-change was made so as not to conflict with the artist “To Anyone” that debuted in 2005.
Talk about early blunder.
I hope this does not bring any bad omen (or any possible lawsuits) to the group. Let’s just wait for their debut album to be released to see if this name changing mumbo-jumbo brings success or failure to the girl group.
