500 Year Old Female Mummy in South Korea

A 500 year old female mummy was recently excavated from a construction site in Osan, Gyeonggi-do Province in South Korea.
According to the studies conducted to the mummy and the excavation site by the Seogyeong Cultural Properties Research Institute in Seoul, the mummy, measured at 5 feet (154 centimeters), is estimated to be 500 years old. The mummy is also believed to be a wife of a high-ranking government official who served during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) in the 16th century based on her husband’s nameplate found attached in her wooden coffin. She was also wrapped in precious silk and was buried together with her valuable dresses and accessories (includes a ceramic pot, comb, and hair ornaments).
The lady mummy is also believed to be naturally mummified due to the process done during her burial. Based on the research, the woman was placed at the time of her death in a double-sided coffin and was sealed-shut with a limestone mixture that looks like plaster which prevented air, water and other elements from decaying the body.
Another high-profile tomb was also discovered recently beside the lady mummy’s tomb at the construction site in Osan. Believed to be the tomb of the woman’s husband, the new tomb (and its contents) is expected to be presented to the press and the international science community in the coming weeks.
